The ISMIP7 project is seeking dynamic, mission-oriented polar scientists to join our team and contribute to the following positions. These positions are funded via a generous grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation. While they are housed at a single institution, they serve the needs of the entire project.
The figure at left illustrates many of the core tasks and staff that contribute to the achievement of ISMIP7 goals. The blue rectangles represent positions and tasks that are funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation (HSF) and include key research positions that contribute to e.g., the achievement of focus group (FG) goals, as well as data processing and the analysis of results. The project is hiring for many of these "blue rectangles" with positions and contact details described below.

The postdoctoral scholar on this position will support the research activities of the Antarctic ice-ocean focus group of ISMIP7. The aim of this multi-disciplinary team is to develop a protocol and provide the boundary conditions for ocean-driven melting needed by ice-sheet modelers that employ them for projections to simulate the evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet. Further, the group aims to provide an understanding of the influence of choices made on the resulting projections. This project encompasses developing, conducting and summarising the Melt parameterization Model Intercomparison Project (MeltMIP). MeltMIP which, analogously to initMIP for model initialisation (Seroussi et al., 2019), tests the influence of melt parameterisation choices and parameter values on projections, through idealized experiments. Better understanding the ice-ocean interactions could help to reduce the large uncertainties around future Antarctic ice loss.
This position will be under the supervision of Ronja Reese at Northumbria University in Newcastle (UK) and is anticipated to start in summer 2025. More information coming soon.
The ISMIP7 Antarctic Ice Sheet analysis and ensemble support aims to produce robust projections of the Antarctic ice sheet contributions to sea level rise and freshwater discharge needed by the science community and stakeholders. The postdoctoral scholar working on this project will assist in the design of the Antarctic experiments and the ensemble design, and support the analysis of the results to provide robust estimates of Antarctic contribution to sea level. They will closely work with all the focus groups specializing in Antarctic ice sheet processes (SMB, ocean melt, ice shelf collapse, GIA) as well as the observations focus group. We will also test the experimental protocol extensively with an ice sheet model to ensure the feasibility and easy implementation of the experiments and implementation of the different processes.
This position will be under the supervision of Helene Seroussi at Dartmouth College (US) and will start in summer 2025.
This position will support the ISM-ESM focus group (Task F1)and will be under the guidance of Robin Smith in Reading (UK).
We anticipate this position will be filled in 2026-2027.
