Funded researchers within the ISMIP7 project
The ISMIP7 postdocs are dynamic, mission-oriented polar scientists. These positions are funded via a generous grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation. While they are housed at a single institution, they are contributing to a global project.
Surface Mass Balance • 2025
Hi, my name is Devon Dunmire, and I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University at Buffalo. My work focuses on connections between ice sheets and the climate system. I am currently helping prepare the atmospheric forcing data for ISMIP7 and assessing uncertainty in this atmospheric forcing data related to the downscaling method. Previously, my work has focused on surface hydrology of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice shelves, applying AI to satellite and model data, and better estimating seasonal snow resources in mountain regions.
Surface Mass Balance • 2025
I am a postdoc working in the SMBmip focus group. I am currently comparing different SMB products for the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Surface Mass Balance/ GrIS: Ocean + Calving • 2025
I have a background in civil engineering and statistics. My current research uses statistical techniques to emulate sea-level contributions from ice sheets and improve probabilistic projections. Broadly, I am interested in how statistical and data-driven tools can be used to address problems in climate and sea level science.
Greenland Analysis • 2025
TBA
Antarctica Analysis • 2026
I am a postdoc working with Helene Seroussi at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, USA. I am working on coordinating the implementation of the ISMIP7 protocols for ice sheet modeling groups and processing the resulting data for the Antarctic portion of the project - all while also submitting the Dartmouth modeling experiments. My background is in dynamical systems analysis, geology, remote sensing, GNSS, and glaciological modeling. I am particularly interested in subglacial hydrological systems coupled to ice flow to better resolve the sliding boundary conditions.
AIS: Ice Shelf Collapse + Calving • 2026
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Geography at Penn State, specializing in satellite remote sensing and machine learning for studying supraglacial hydrology and ice-sheet processes. My research focuses on understanding how surface meltwater influences the stability and future evolution of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. My primary role in ISMIP7 is contributing to Antarctic ice-shelf collapse projections through firn densification model emulation, helping to improve the representation of hydrofracture and calving in ice-sheet models. Alongside this, I use satellite observations and machine-learning approaches to map supraglacial meltwater and quantify lake depths and volumes across Antarctica.
Surface Mass Balance/ AIS: Ice Shelf Collapse + Calving • 2026
Hello! I'm Danni Grau. I am currently a postdoc at the University at Buffalo studying supraglacial melt lakes and their effects in large ice-sheet models. I am part of the Fracture and SMB focus groups in the ISMIP7 projects as well as assisting with some logistical things for ISMIP7. I am interested in improving the way supraglacial hydrology is modeled/incorporated into large Ice-Sheet and Earth-System models and the impact it will have on future projections.
GrIS: Ocean + Calving • 2026
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh working within the Greenland Ocean Forcing focus group. My research focuses on quantifying the projected changes in ocean forcing around the Greenland Ice Sheet and on better understanding the role of the ocean in driving ice sheet mass loss.
AIS: Basal Melt • 2026
I recently finished my PhD at King's College London, working on projections of Antarctica's sea-level contribution. I use a combination of numerical ice sheet models and statistical machine learning methods to quantify uncertainty in sea level projections. I'm particularly interested in climate overshoots and the reversibility of climate change in the polar regions.
